  • Legacy URLs
  • Standard URLs
  • Custom URLs

However, don’t worry. These URLs will lead to the same content and place. These are just some modifications made in URLs over the years. They have a historical context, so let’s break it down in easier terms.

Legacy URL

These URLs originated around 2005. During this time, users could only own a single channel. If you wanted to have a second channel, you would have to create a second user ID. After some modifications and YouTube integrating with other Google services, they introduced the option of using Google ID for logging in. This opened the option to create multiple different channels using the same ID.

Standard URL

These URLs gave more freedom to the content creators. It gave them the option to create channels separate from Google IDs. Each channel will consist of a chain of letters and numbers. This will be defined as your YouTube URL.

Custom URL

These are a relatively new URL type. We can alter this kind of URL to our liking. Custom URLs are, however, shorter than standard URLs. It is easier to remember and helps us to personalize it to our liking. However, once we select a custom URL, we cannot change it. To avail custom URL, you will need to meet some minimum requirements.

  • Minimum of 100 subscribers.
  • A duration of 30 days must have passed.
  • Must have uploaded a photo uploaded as a channel icon.
  • Must have uploaded channel content.

Setting up a custom URL

Suppose your channel meets the requirements for obtaining a Custom URL. Having a custom URL will help in bringing more traffic to your channel. It will also help in simplifying your YouTube URL, making it easier to remember. To set up a custom URL, you will need to do the following steps:

  1. Go to YouTube’s Advanced Settings page. Click on the gear icon in the top-right, then choose “Settings.”
  2. From there, click on “Advanced settings,” displayed on the left.
  3. Under your “Channel settings,” A notification will be displayed saying, “You’re eligible for a custom URL.”
  4. Click the link right next to this text. After having clicked on the link, YouTube will show a set of steps to follow. These steps will end in you having made a custom YouTube URL. It will also ask you to read and accept the terms and conditions of usage.
What is my YouTube URL?
  1. Voila! You have your own custom YouTube URL. Your audience will now use this YouTube URL to see your page. Be careful about your URL because you can only have one custom URL at one time. You will not be allowed to change it. You can remove the current one and create an entirely new URL. However, availability will also play a part in this decision. Unique and available URLs are required to set up a custom URL.
