Introduction
Adding subtitles to a YouTube video can benefit you and your channel greatly. You can reach a wider audience and share your content with people worldwide. For this, you need to know how to add subtitle in YouTube and improve your videos’ reach. In this article, we will discuss the ways in which you can do so.
How to Add Subtitle in YouTube
The subtitles you see on YouTube videos are referred to as CC or “Closed Captions”. Adding these in your videos will allow a wider range of audience to watch and enjoy your videos. If you are watching a video that is not recorded in your mother tongue, you can simply turn on subtitles in your first language and enjoy the video. This is also useful for people who are deaf or have difficulty hearing.

You can add the subtitles manually or you can use a pre-written script. Each method takes a different length of time to incorporate the subtitles into the videos.
Add Subtitles Using a Pre-Written Subtitle File
First, you need to make sure whether the file format you have chosen is supported by YouTube or not. The most used file for subtitles is the .srt file. There are several other formats that are supported by the platform. You can check them on YouTube’s help page.
Once you have chosen the file format, follow the steps below:
- Log into your YouTube account and open YouTube Studio (Beta)

- In the left side panel, you will see a tab labeled “Videos”
- Choose the video that you want to add subtitles to
- By selecting the “Advanced” settings option, you can then upload the subtitles. Choose the desired language and then click on the option “Upload Subtitles”
- You have the option of uploading the subtitle file either with timing or without it

- Choose the file, open it and then click on the Save button.
Add Subtitles Manually
This option is available only for those who are using YouTube classic. It is not available for Beta users. To add subtitles in classic mode, follow these steps:

- Open the video manager
- Choose the video you wish to edit
- You will see an option labeled “Subtitles”
- Pick whichever language you want your subtitles to be displayed in and select it
- Go to “Add New Subtitles” and create subtitles
- Now play the video you want to add subtitles to. You can pause the video at a specific time and add subtitles to that
- A text box will be displayed on the left side of the video where you can type and manually enter the subtitles
- You can adjust the duration of each subtitle so that it flows smoothly with the video
- Repeat this process as often as required and add subtitles wherever you want
These are the two ways of adding subtitles to YouTube videos. You can choose the one that suits you the best. We hope that our article has cleared up any queries you might have and enabled you to add subtitles to your videos with ease.
