Twitter can develop a new policy that allows you to mute posts and tweets with specific phrases or words that you do not wish to see in your timeline. Muting these words will remove any tweet that contains the particular term from all areas like the notifications tab, emails, SMS, and even replies in tweets.

However, you should know that muting a particular word or a phrase does not remove them from your search bar. Muting only applies to notifications and your timeline.

What happens when you mute words on Twitter?

  • You will no longer see the muted word on your notifications tab
  • You can still see the muted words when you use the search bar.
  • You will no longer see the muted word on any replies, retweets, quote tweets, and mentions in other people’s or your posts.
  • If you have enabled mobile notifications on your phone, the muting will not be applied to SMS.

Remember that muting words, phrases, and hashtags are not case sensitive, which means that if you mute the word “PUPPIES” in uppercase letters, “puppies” in lower case letters will also be muted.

Similarly, muting certain words will also mute the hashtag related to the muted word. For instance, if you mute “puppies,” even “#puppies” will be muted from your account.

Ensure that you add the “@” sign before the username if you wish to mute another person’s notifications about their tweets. Note that this process will not mute the person’s account.

The default duration of a muted word is forever. You can choose to change it if you don’t feel like muting some of the terms anymore.
