What is tagging?
Tagging is a way of adding the tagged post to the intended person’s timeline. Of course, the person can choose to display it or not on their timelines. It serves several purposes.
Tagging is a way of letting your acquaintances know who you’re sharing a photo with. Say you’ve just toured to an exotic island and made friends there. You’d now want your contacts to know who they’re. An excellent way to do this is to tag your new friends into the post. That way, everyone can know who they are. People may or may not choose to go to their profiles.
Tagging also usually involves notifying the tagged people of your status (a post on Facebook).
To make sure, if you or someone else tag each other in Facebook posts, the tagged person can choose to remove the tags and decide how it shows in their timeline. Here’s telling you how to tag someone on Facebook.
How to tag someone on Facebook? The complete guide
If on desktop
Go to https://facebook.com and click your profile picture on the top right. You’ll be taken to your timeline. You can see a grey box marked with a “What’s on your mind?” placeholder. You would now click on it and make your post. It could either be a text status or a photo, or even a collection of pictures.
Just under the blank bar, there’s a section called “Add to your post.” You now click this where there are a bunch of icons. The second icon from the left is the tagging option. You can click that and search for your friends whom you’d like to tag in your post.
Alternatively, you can click on the three dots at the far right if you’re unable to discern the icon. It would take you to a page containing the physical meanings of the icons. You can then proceed to tag people from there.
If you want some genuine likes on the tagged posts, here’s one unique place to do it.
On mobile app
Open the Facebook app on mobile. Log in with your credentials. Skip if already logged in. On the top, you can see a bunch of options starting from the news feed, friends, groups, etc. On the far right, there’s a symbol containing three parallel lines. You’re to click this line. It will take you to a new page. You can see your profile name and picture containing an instruction telling you to see your profile on this page.
Open your profile after clicking on that and scroll down to find the “What’s on your mind?” placeholder. Make a status update or add a bunch of photos. There’s a set of added features that you can incorporate into your post. Some of them are Feeling/Activity, Check-in, GIF, etc. On the second in this list is tag people. Upon clicking the option, you’re led to a page with a list of some friends. You can choose from among them or use the search bar at the top to find the intended friends. Do this, and you’re done.
Tagging in comments
When tagging people in comments, unlike posts, you can use a shortcut. You can simply use the “@” sign, and you’ll be given a search bar and recommended list, which you can instantly use to add tags to it. You can also use this trick in the captions of your Facebook photos and statuses. It saves you that extra bit of time with having to work around the steps on how to tag someone on Facebook.
